Five-year plans… Well, considering that I barely know what I want to eat for lunch tomorrow, planning five years ahead makes me sick. In college they ask you a lot, “where do you see yourself in five years?” and I can confidently say I just really hope I don’t live with my mom. As much as people will try and stress to you why you should have one, I’m gonna tell you why it doesn’t matter.
When you go to college, you’re 18 years old. Your frontal lobe hasn’t even developed yet they expect you to pick a major, and a career goal, and plan out what life will be like after college. Whoever came up with that idea sucks. How is it fair to put so much pressure on someone who basically just learned to drive.
I have never had a five year plan and that’s because I think they are so extremely stupid. Putting the pressure of having to plan out the next five years creates fears of if you step outside of that plan, you will be doomed. That’s just not true. Young adults change their minds, or fail classes, or even just want to try something different; And the fear of messing up that plan and it not working out can take away from working towards the life you want.
When I came to college I wholeheartedly thought I was going to be a teacher. If I had felt trapped to a five year plan, I would have never realized that communications was right for me. I still don’t exactly know what I want to do in communications but I like learning about it. College is about learning what interests you and what will make you happy in the long run and sometimes having a plan can hold you back from realizing that you have so many choices and opportunities out there.
So if you are stressed about a five year plan, don’t let your plan determine what you truly want to do. If you pick something that you don’t have full interest in, don’t be afraid to check out things outside of what you have planned cause you might find something that really sparks your interest and makes you excited for the future.
