As someone who is overly involved on campus, it’s safe to say that I would’ve probably transferred if I didn’t get involved. Getting involved doesn’t mean you have to be the president of every club or be at an event everyday. It’s important that you do save time for yourself to doomscroll and bed rot, but if you don’t get involved on campus, that can just lead to a miserable 4 years ahead.
I didn’t get super involved until my junior year of college and I regret it heavily. Freshman year I joined a sorority and then immediately jumped into leadership roles which felt fulfilling until I still had so much time wishing I could do more. I heard all of my friends talking about their clubs and I was always so jealous that I had nowhere to be during the club meeting period every week. I finally gave in and joined the school tv station which gave me things to do on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights. I also joined the line dancing club my friend started which gave me something to do on monday nights. Both clubs introduced me to so many other people, including people that I sat next to in class that I had no idea shared the same interests as me. I also decided to apply to be an Orientation Leader which was truly the greatest decision of all.
Being involved on campus means so much more than just being part of a few clubs that I can add to my resume. It’s getting to meet new people, find new hobbies, and taking a break from school to enjoy the little things college has to offer. I get to hear about everyone’s experiences and learn about other majors, as well as getting to just connect with the people I’ll be next to in the buffet line at the dining hall.
Growing up I always loved getting to hangout with my friends but now I get to hang out with them while also doing fun things like line dancing, recording funny episodes of our shows, dancing around at orientation, and giving back to the community through philanthropies. Not only are they funny, they remind me that life doesn’t have to always be about school and work. While getting good grades is always the main priority at college, spending the day locked in your room studying can be draining and can take a serious toll on your mental health. If Washington never went out for a drink with his soldiers after fighting all day, he wou;d’ve never been able to cross the Delaware. Little things like socializing with the people around you can make you feel comfortable and happy.
If you can confidently say that you will have fun in college slaving away and never going out, props to you. It takes dedication to not have a social life; But having some s’mores outside your dorm with the people you’re gonna walk across the stage with is so rewarding. You don’t even have to do anything crazy like I do, it just takes one small leap to go to an activity and chat with everyone and give yourself that little bit of grace you know you deserve. And if you’re still reading this and having doubts, just go do one small thing and see what you think. You can never know something’s not right for you until you try it. So go to that silly event that your school is putting on cause maybe you’ll meet your best friends there and then you have those people to lean on when school feels like it’s too much. Go try something new and take those opportunities that life is giving you, and if you don’t… well your tuition is still paying for it so you’re simply wasting your money.
